Second Life Salons

We have regular monthly salons in San Francisco (paralleled in the online virtual world Second Life), entitled Luna Philosophie, and periodic salons held entirely in Second Life.

A salon is a relatively informal guided discussion on a set topic, with (in our case) open attendance.

These salons will draw from the many ongoing activities and studies at NASA and in the space community, and provide a channel for a wider audience to give input, feedback and fresh ideas into the process.

The discussion output from each salon will be summarized and fed back into these activities and studies.

The NASA CoLab salons will provide an open opportunity for substantive input on important space exploration topics.

We welcome suggestions for salon topics!

To log into the meeting location on NASA CoLab island in Second Life:
1. Log into your Second Life client,
2. Load this URL in your web browser.
3. Click the "Teleport" button displayed at the URL
4. Switch to your Second Life client. A window will now be displayed with a birds-eye view map, and it will be centered on the location you want to teleport to.
5. Simply click the "Teleport" button at the bottom right-hand area of this World Map, and you will be transported to your new location.
6. If you're still having issues, see troubleshooting information below.

Second Life Location Troubleshooting
1. If you teleported to the main CoLab island landing spot, look a little to your left

2. make sure your local island coordinates are <181,25,56>. These are displayed at the top of your Second Life client window just to the right of the various menus. As you move left, right, up and down, these coordinates reflect your 3 dimensional position. If teleporting fails but you are on CoLab island, navigate yourself to these coordinates by walking.

3. If all else fails, you can always instant message a member of the team: Dragonfire Kelly, Drew Frobozz, Astrodel Zapedzki, or Zharon Moksung:
-click the 'search' button at the bottom middle of your Second Life client window
-click on the "people" tab
-enter a name-- for example, "Dragonfire Kelly" in the search bar
-at the bottom of the profile window that displays, click the button that says "Instant Message..."
-ask for a teleport, or a "TP"!

July 23, 2008: Luna Philosophie WHAT: The ninth Luna Philosophie will feature Rusty Schweickart, Apollo 9 Astronaut, of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE). Rusty will give a presentation about the threat of “Near Earth Objects (NEO).”

What would YOU like to ask of young people that work at NASA? On July 20, 2008, members from the younger generation from four NASA Centers will discuss the future of space exploration as part of the Lunar Science Conference at NASA Ames Research Center. The panel is entitled "This is your Future-- Why the Moon?" and is open to a variety of space topics. We invite you to participate by submitting questions to the panel online, modeled after the CNN YouTube Debates. If your video is selected, it will be aired at the event and discussed by the panel.

WHAT:The eighth Luna Philosophie will feature Patrick Hogan, Project Manager and Randy Kim, UI, Data and Graphics Lead for NASA World Wind, an open source 3D interactive world viewer. Together, they will be discussing "Open Source at NASA: 3D Visualization with NASA World Wind".
